[pianotech] S & S Bearings...was Punching Trick???

Not exactly. When you remove the roller bearing and go to a flat punching
you can add a bottom shoe to the keystick that's the same thickness as the
roller bearing you just removed making the key taller and thus stiffer (as
with any beam). Some time back this was addressed here possibly under the
heading of "action saturation" referring to the phenomenon of diminishing
returns on the production of hammer speed with increasing accelerating of
the front of the key because of key flexing.

Meaning the flexing of the keystick? How would that work? By increasing the
fulcrum contact area?

I've heard of people removing the bearing and increasing the key height
proportionally to reduce flexibility. Going the other direction seems like
it could be a problem.

What about the key height?

On a related note, has anyone retrofitted a standard keyboard with S&S

bearings? How much difference did it make and how much trouble was it?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer any of these.

I have done that on two pianos. One was the Irish P.O.S. with all plastic
parts, including keys. I liked the concept and found that it worked well in
that application. The only thing needed that would be out of the ordinary is
the longeer balance rail pins. Made a good retrofit project.
