I suspect he read some where, or was told by his teacher, that that was "what is was back then"..or some other such b.s.!! What the hell good is the instrument, (albeit a reproduction, where a proper scale @440 is definately called for), at that pitch, in these modern times of 440?? Oh!!! That's the pitch that the Baroque Instrument Builders of "REPRODUCTION" Sting instruments recommend for their "less than stellar construction" Thingees!<G> Such is the way of Academia...SIGH!zzzzzzzz Sheesh!
