The two-pass cauls have one black stripe on top for the first one you use, and two black stripes on the second set. The first set is .146" *plus* the one thickness of cloth; when you bush the first side, this takes up the remaining space in the mortise. The second set is the target size: .146" (or a shade smaller), since on the second pass you already have one thickness of cloth in there. If you're used to the old way, both sides at once with the brass cauls, it's real easy to reuse the first set of cauls by mistake, leaving a gap about the thickness of one strip of cloth. I love this two-pass method. Since you apply the glue to the cloth and not the mortise, it gets evenly everywhere it needs to be, and nowhere else. Full instructions on his website: http://www.spurlocktools.com/id55_two_caul_method.htm The other possibility is that the mortise is damaged as a result of gouging out the old, stubborn non-hide glue used before. He's got a caul for that, too. --Cy-- Cy Shuster, RPT Albuquerque, NM www.shusterpiano.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
