Willem,
This is not, entirely, true. I have worked on an upright that had two plates. One, in the normal location. The other was the back of the piano. Both, were strung and tuneable, although the one on the back had to be chip tuned. What the real purpose of this "thing" was, I have no clue. probably had something to do with sympathetic vibration, but all it really did was make a lot of NOISE, when played. The rear strung plate had no damping system, as far as I could ascertain. Weird, to say the least.
Regards,
Joe

Israel also mentioned that some old Steinways had back plates. I've never run across one of them, and didn't even know they existed. Certainly an interesting piano, to say the least. I stand corrected, but at the same time, doubt if this is what Marshall's customer has.

Wim.

Willem said: "People who don't know anything about pianos assume a lot of things. What Jim was referring to was that in some pianos, instead of being made out of wood, the back posts are made of metal. But some people think that because the posts are metal, that they are they plate. The plate is still in the same place."
