The Nights in White Satin was recorded using a melotron, a tape based
recording of instrumental sounds, mainly violins, which always seem to vary
in pitch, It recorded a group of violins, note per note and could be played
back on a keyboard. They , along with the Bee Gees and others used
melotrons,

If you want a real bad out of tune piano on a tuning, listen to New York
State Of Mind by Billy Joel. I don't think it was planned that way because
it is not consistent.
That doesn't mean that I have no soft spot in my heart for studio tuners.
You can do your best in the morning and after hours of banging, they get
there take, but your tuning is out the window.

is it just me or does the string section in the instrumental
portion of the recording nights in white satin sound a few cents off from
the other orchestration and this song's vocals?
i hear it in other rock songs too... anyone?
