I have played around with a pistol type soldering gun plugged into a light dimmer switch, but have not had the opportunity to try it on a piano with stiff centers. I removed the soldering tip and made a couple tapered blades from #4 heavy copper wire grounding wire. The blades can be wedged between the flanges to make electrical contact with the ends of the center pin. I think it works by carbonizing (burning) any gunk on the pin rather than by drying out the felt. This makes sense to me when the flange gets stiffer with use: the gunk gets gunkier, like taffy. -- Regards, Jeff Deutschle Please address replies to the List. Do not E-mail me privately.
