[pianotech] Further explanation: How long do unisons hold?

What is my point of asking "How long do unison’s hold?" It’s kind of a question that’s been in the back of my mind for awhile... I tune as a recent HP-retired part-timer technician (tuning for the past 7-8 years). I’ve been to 3 Natl Conventions and one Chicago Regional.

After moving to St Louis (from Chicago), I’m getting all variations of pianos to tune (good & bad). I’ve had occasion, in an effort to get my clientel up & running, to go back & be able to look & touch & feel various pianos I’ve tuned. Prior to recent times, I tuned & went, coming back in the usual 6-12 months except in the case of my Kawai 5’10” at home.

So I’m still trying to increase my abilities and knowledge (and probably always will…). I appreciate you all sharing your ideas & comments in this forum, even when there is disagreement... which gives me more than one school of thought to chew on.

Using a Verituner, I think my temperaments are pretty good... and I always go over the piano one last time, searching for those warbling unisons... augmented by checking fifths for more of the same.

So, this being almost a life’s story, my latest focus seems to be getting unisons that stay as long as possible. (I recently enjoyed reading Steve Brady’s “Under the Lid” book, which has only pushed me to challenge myself even more.)

A long answer as to why I’m asking the question. A couple hours, days, or weeks??

Thanks for any/all input... Bill Fritz, St Louis

Bill,
All the jokes aside, unisons are the most important tuning we do. We should be
ocusing on unisons above all else, but how can you put a time length on unisons
ith all the variables. We do the best we can. A very skilled tuner's
nisons will last longer than someone with less skill. I expect to be able to
ome to our concert piano and have it within a cent and the unisons very close.
once a year customer's piano unisons are going to stay as well as can be
xpected...whatever that means.
Out of curiosity, what is your point?
