[pianotech] liability insurance

Yes, I think it’s a good idea to carry liability insurance. It’s not really that expensive, especially the liability portion and there are circumstances in which things can happen. Apropos to a recent discussion, you lift the lid and it falls off the piano onto the floor damaging both the lid and the floor and the Ming Dynasty lamp sitting on the table behind it. A child pulls the utility knife out of your tool kit while you’re out to the car getting the vacuum and slices his hand open. I don’t know, I suppose if I think about it longer I could come up with some nightmare scenarios. Knock on wood, I’ve never had to use it but you have it hoping you don’t. It also covers things like actions in transit (a rear-ender with a new Steinway action in the back can be a major expense without insurance), and, of course, pianos that you might have in your possession. I get my insurance through Liberty NW which provides policies to our trade members. The amounts and coverage can be customized for your own particular needs.

David, what liability insurance company do you carry? And how much? Do you think that's the norm for a Technician who is mainly a tuner vs a rebuilder??
