[pianotech] Noisy jack springs on a vertical

Tom,

Thanks. I'll try that. And, you may be right. The coils could be compressing on each other causing the metallic "chinging". In which case, what can be done in that situation?

Barb,
I'd fill the hole in the jack with a small amount of VJ then reset the spring back in place. Easy thing to try that will do no harm in any case.
Are you sure it's not the coils in the spring itself touching when compressed?

  Hello all,

Here is a problem I've run into only 1 other time before and I came across it again on another piano. The jack springs under the jack toes rattle when the key is played. On this particular piano, it is a grey market U2 with plastic jacks. I've checked the springs to make sure they're still glued solid in the wippens, and that they are in place correctly under the jacks. It just seems to me there is just enough gap in the spring grooves under the toes where the springs sit that is causing them to shift and rattle when played.

Has anyone else ran into a similar problem, and what can be done other than possibly replacing springs and/or jacks? Or maybe am I hearing something completely different? It sure does sound like noisy springs to me when I isolate the movements.

  Thanks for the help.
