[pianotech] Philmont piano

Actually, there are four pianos at the main camp.

If I recall, one of them was in the main dining hall. Despite the fact that there is no temperature control in that building, the old upright was on pitch, and working fairly well. I probably tuned to the other two pianos, but don't recall where they were.

I also had heard about the generosity of the Phillips family. Our son Chris went to Phillmont once as a scout, and a second time as a counselor for three weeks. He loved it out there.

Actually, there are four pianos at the main camp. The 1927 Knabe B Grand with the Ampico A reproducer is in the Villa Philmonte. It is the former ranch house of Waite Phillips who donated the house and 135,000 acres to the Boy Scouts of America. It was, as near as I can tell, created for the Phillips and was one of two reproducing grands he ordered from Knabe in 1927. The other is at Philbrook, the home he donated to the city of Tulsa for their art museum. In addition, he gave the BSA the Philtower office building in downtown Tulsa, the tenant rental was to pay for upkeep of the Philmont Scout Ranch. He gave another office building to the city of Tulsa to pay for the upkeep of Philbrook. He and his wife Genevieve gave away half of what they made from very early on in their marriage. His most famous saying is
"you never own anything until you can give it away."
It was a real privilege to restore his piano but even more to learn about such a remarkable individual.
Best,
DP

I went to Philmont in 1965 . Don't remember seeing any pianos at 14 years of age ! However , I do remember beautiful , high-altitude hiking and 45 pound backpacks and dehydrated food that was questionable ( taste-wise ) . That piano that was restored ; most likely was somewhere on the grounds . Wish I had come across it !

I just saw on Allan's blog, that Dale and Norman were involved in the restoration of the Philmont Scout Ranch piano. Interestingly, I tuned that piano, or least tried to, back in 1992 or 3, and recommended at that time that it needed to be restored. Glad to see it was finally done.
