[pianotech] Wurlitzer roll top?

List,

I don't recall if this has been mentioned on the list, but perhaps I missed
it. Ran across this 1942-ish Wurlitzer spinet last week. I had not seen this
particular case before. It appears to have a "roll top desk" key cover.

Interesting, but I couldn't see a way to remove the key cover without either
breaking it apart or taking apart the case. See the pictures. Anyone seen
these before? And is there an easy way to remove the cover? I looked, but
all I could see was a definite stopping place in each arm, and a definite
stopping place near the plate. I tried to see if flexing the cover might
help it get out at the plate, but that didn't work. I supposed it is
possible that removing the keyslip and cheek blocks might reveal a way, but
it looked like the cover stops are in the arms themselves, which wouldn't be
affected by the keyslip. (Sorry I didn't get a picture of that. I meant to,
but it slipped my mind when the appointment ran long due to two bass strings
breaking during the tuning.)

It appears that all the normal work that pianos need could be done with the
cover in place. Just seemed a strange way to design it.

Not pictured are the metal stops that screw in near the plate. You can see
the screw holes for them in the third picture.
