I used to be able to pick up the side of almost any size upright. I've also laid pianos on their back, making sure there are a couple of books under the back. But not anymore. At my age, my back is no longer strong enough to do that. I have a tilter, but I have also used a two wheeled hand truck to lay the piano on its back.
