[pianotech] MOE for sugar pine versus sitka spruce

Thank you for that info. I have had others do these calculations for me
in the past for rib dimensions, and do not have this formula. I would
love to do this calculation myself. Is it possible to ask for this beam
deflection formula?

I know you asked Nick but the answer is you simply substitute the MOE number
for sugar pine into your beam deflection formula that formerly had the MOE
for sitka spruce.

Hi Nick:

I'm trying to understand this too. Do these MOE values mean that Sugar Pine
is about 75.8% as stiff as Sitka Spruce? If one were to substitute a sugar
pine rib for a sitka spruce one, how would one go about calculating sizing
the sugar pine rib to accommodate the same loading as a sitka spruce rib of
given dimensions?

David,

Your chart is compiled in SI units. So, making conversions from English MOEs
for Sugar Pine and Sitka, we come up with this:

Sugar Pine MOE = 837
Sitka Spruce MOE = 1104

Now you can compare this data to your chart.

I assume you are considering for evaluating rib materials? No need to reply
to this question, though.

Hope this helps
