On the table, the base was solidly anchored, and all metronomes beat at their own cycle and phase. On the beer cans (must have been), the base was free to move, and as it did, each metronome had an effect on the movement of the base. Those close enough to the same period fell into phase as a result, where the two on the left didn't because they were two far off period, one too fast, one too slow, so they beat against the others.
