Randy

Perhpas there is a crack in the plate strut. Have you removed the action and closely inspected that strut from teh pin block area to the hitch pin area?

Subject: [pianotech] Unstable tuning on Everett model 11

Hello all, hope some one can help!!!

Octave 5 just above the tenor strut for about 8 or 9 notes just keeps changing and going flat. At first I suspected a crack in the plate at the hitch pin area. Close inspection revealed no crack that I could see. There was a small separation (about a 16th") between the pinblock and three treble back posts which I have seen quite often on these 45" studio uprights (my own Everett included). I clamped the back together and removed the long screws at the top of the plate and installed 3/8" carriage bolts. It closed up the separation completely. I checked the pressure bar screws to see if they were stripped and was able to get about 1/2 turn on ones in the suspect area and the pitch came up 20-30 cents in that area. But they were not stripped.

Ah haa, problem solved I thought.

I lowered the pitch in octave 5 back down and tuned the whole piano. The next day the customer called and said those notes were very out of tune again.

No obvious separation of bridges and no cracks in soundboard. Any ideas on what I may be missing???
