With an open faced block, couldn't you drill a pilot hole and install a screw alongside the broken one? Then just veneer and stain over the broken one. Or get a broken screw extractor, available in 1/4" and 3/8', Pianotek has them. Cut a hole around the broken screw. Then plug and install a new screw.
