Personnaly I would want the rod as clean as possible, but I don't think a little powder will do much harm.

Thanks for that, Wim, seems a great suggestion for the cleaning part.  

 Would you be inclined afterward to brush the leathers with Teflon powder, in manner of grand rollers? Or not?  And would you have the rod clean but unlubricated, or dusted with teflon powder too, or with just a tiny wipe of Protek grease or Protek CLP on it?
