In California (and many states) there are two different entities. The State Board of Equalization is licensing for collecting sales tax. They issue a resale number and are solely responsible for the collection of sales tax. Then there are local municipality requirements for business licenses. Some have them some don't. In San Francisco they are required because they levy taxes on payroll amounts (a non issue if you have no employees) plus a nominal registration fee. So, you need to check the requirements of the state and municipality in which you do business. They vary. Gary: As Mike said, it's all about your state & local government. Here in Texas we have to have a Sales Tax number so we can collect sales tax and submit it (usually quarterly). What state are you in? dp -----Original Message----- From: pianotech-bounces at ptg.org [mailto:pianotech-bounces at ptg.org] On Behalf Of Mike Spalding Sent: Friday, June 03, 2011 2:54 PM To: pianotech at ptg.org Subject: Re: [pianotech] business license? Gary, Depends on individual state law. Here in Wisconsin we're required to have a retailer's license, at a cost of $10 every 2 years. All it does is assign us a tax ID so we can collect sales tax and pass it on to the state every quarter. Every state has its own rules.
