My experience is that kind of coverage makes you an extravagant consumer and
is the same reason our health care system is a mess. For a $1500 vehicle I
would not spend $500 on a new windshield. I'd get one from the salvage yard
for less than $50 and find an installer who moonlights and would install it
for $40.  And I still save money compared to what extended insurance
coverage costs. I've saved thousands in the years I've been driving
following this rationale. YMMV.

I've never had minimum insurance coverage and never plan to.  Comprehensive
is a good thing to have.  Example:  I recently paid $50 (deductible) for a
$500 windshield.
