What do others think, about appreciation of piano sound?

Best regards,

David

Well sir, I was tuning a piano for a very nice person of the higher years of age, in a oh so comfortable apartment with a grandioso view when this very post came to mind. Today’s music listeners are enjoying their downloads on iPods with headphones that you hide in your shirt pocket. 40 years ago we listened to music with monstrous cans on our heads or with large speakers that doubled as lamp tables. 60 years ago we enjoyed stereo recordings from consoles that contained FM radios and HIFI’s all in one.

My customer bought her spinet piano about then ........... brand new ........... and has been pleased with it ever since. Her perception of piano sound ...... or her desire to accept her limitations to what she can afford in dollars and accommodating space ............ is a piano made in Lester, PA. For others it would be Memphis, TN or somewhere in North Carolina .......... Mississippi, Mexico, Korea, and now China. Our job is to make that sucker sound as good as we can for the money they’re willing to spend. We know we’ve all tuned far better instruments and would be spoiled as ever if we only tuned upper end spendy and sizable pianos, but we’re sitting in HER living room full of a lifelong collection of STUFF!!! If you want to earn your keep, you gotta tow the line and make her happy with her spinet piano. If people want to spend far more than the final result is worth, IMHO, it’s our job to let them know that prior to the work being done. If they proceed, enjoy the end result and take your earnings to the bank!!

Some day I will be taking a plain box type piano typically from the teens and twenties and turning it into a work of art with inlay, carvings, new insides, and a fine finish. It will be a sight to see, a pleasure to play, and memorable to hear. The cost?? More than I’m willing to put into such a beast at this point in my life!!! Resale?? Naw. I just want to have a beautiful piano that is all the above in my house!! At that, my friends is about all some people want with their piano.

Lar
