Hi, Patrick. I did this to a Baldwin I have, and I stripped them, as Joe suggested. When re-finishing them, I used Qualasole (sp?). It is a rub-on finish, like French Polish. No overspray, etc, build it as you see fit. The beautiful walnut under the grungy black paint is beautiful, and the finish has a beautiful, not too glossy, not too dull sheen to it that I just love.
