Are you referring to screws which go into the bottoms of the legs? In that case, I'd leave the holes small,
and use some tempered decking screws ("Star-Drive" type, preferably) forgetting about the "lag screws".
(Which, like most fasteners cheaply made and coming from overseas, these days, tend to break as you tighten them!)
