On a similar subject, I recall some years ago, (but maybe it was just a story), that Bosendorfer built two identical grands, one with a solid spruce board and one with a laminated board, and that professional pianists could not tell the difference.

I heard an interesting story on NPR today about old violins versus new ones.  Researchers did a double blind study to see if professional violinists could distinguish the old violins from some new ones.
