I forgot to mention, that when removing the warmed up remnant, it helps a lot to move it back and forth at first, rather than just trying to unscrew it in one direction..  You can increase the wiggle until it is turning free enough to risk a full revolution.  
(Once both ends break, it is a drill and plug project, which is all out of whack on the time/cost scale)

The safest way is to heat the remaining stub before you attempt to turn it.  If it broke the top off, it can break the bottom, too.  It doesn't need to be red hot, just really warm.

When the letoff screw in a Steinway grand breaks  at the top,what is the safest way of removing the remainder of the screw without having to drill the broken part out in order to replace with a new letoff screw?
