Just sadistic, judging from the rest of Steinway upright design. 
Crippling hired help seems to have been considered light entertainment 
back then.

Hire it done, and let someone else be killed by the stupid thing. I 
moved one way back when, and the experience forever cured me of even 
considering any repeat attempts.

If it hurts, don't do it.
