As the U.S. government, unwisely and irresponsibly, only tests a tiny portion of the 100,000+ industrial chemicals in use "out here" (including "fragrances") for safety, it is reasonable to suspect that many are toxic. Even in small doses. (The corporate-controled, U.S. governmental stance is to allow the use of all chemicals, UNTIL they start showing "problems". And then allow their continued use, "until all the results are in". Unless, perhaps, the harm is obvious, blatant and egregious.) And a report by the CDC a few years ago stated that, when in combination, some may be 1,000 times more toxic than "solo"! Now compare that policy to Europe's, please, where the safety of chemicals must be proven PRIOR to their legal use.
Bottom line: please assume that all human-synthesized chemicals are toxic, and wear your carbon filter mask. Either the replaceable cartridge type, or the simple fabric shell-type, but with carbon impregnated in it.
( Which I've found at most hardware stores, lately, and are effective for "light" toxins, including simple bad smells.)
Bonus Factoid: British researchers have recently shown that bad smells cause bad dreams.
