Sorry if I jumped the gun on this. How many pianos are we talking about? Are they all over the place, or just in a couple of rooms? I've been in several homes with mice, but I don't think there has ever been a solution to keep mice out of just the piano, other than to keep them out of the whole house.

Hi Wim,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I already reported the problem, the Dean's office and building administrator are aware, and the exterminator has already been in. Since I'm on staff, however, I'd just like to be proactive with respect to the pianos if that is doable and relatively easy (like some deterrent odor, etc.). Especially since I've been working my way through the inventory, and would like to keep them clean if possible. Whether private homes or public venues, it is, at least in some respects, a piano technician's problem. It seems to me we should at least be able to make informed recommendations about how to keep mice out of pianos, or to say there is no way to do so if that is the case.

This is not a piano technician's problem. You should talk to your dept chair. If there are mice in pianos, they are everywhere, and should taken care of by professional exterminators

We are having a problem with mice at the school. Plenty of evidence of their entering and using certain pianos. What are the safest and most effective methods for deterring them from going inside pianos (upright and grand) in an institutional (university) setting? Also, are there any methods I should be warned against? Many thanks!
