Greetings,
It may be that lying on its back allows more twist in the case than
when it sits on its legs, but I would be surprised if it could damage
anything. If you are really concerned, prop it up on three points and
there won't be any twist. The springs will get a workout, but I don't
think that hurts them.

A potential new customer contacted me today and asked if it's OK to
transport a console piano from Ohio to Minnesota - on its back - in the
back of a minivan. I vaguely recall someone posting here a few years
ago advising against that. I think the plate being horizontal had
something to do with the rationale, but I can't find anything in the
archives.
