Well, thank you all for your opinions.  
Joe: Piano Parts andTheir Functions said beam for Kawai, brace for Baldwin and Steinway.  Glad you understood what I meant..
Terry, you're right!  It's a 1922 Baldwin.
It looks like a recent break and my guess is something pushed hard against the attached block (the one with the four screws in it). A slightly different angle shows that a screw (bottom to top) has been removed and the 4 screws you can see in the picture were loose with the block tipped toward the soundboard). I've seen these blocks before. What are they for??  What would happen if I removed it?? (not the beam, the block)
I'm inclined to leave it alone unless knowing it's there bothers the owner .  "Dual beam bracing" Don, you're a hoot!
