The main problem is the basic design of those racks, (not really the desk, ...that's the horizontal part.<G>). Most of my clients that have those things, I suggest that they put a Hymnal or equal thickness book behind it, and leave it there so that the stress is negated. I also tell them that the rack needs to be removed when the piano is moved. Along with that, most of those spinets and consoles with those racks, also have free-standing legs, which, also need to be removed, (if possible), when moved. I have used brass "c" channel to repair those that are major traumatized. That's about as close to "..prevent(ing) the screw from splitting it again..." that I've been able to do. Just poor design in the first place. Sometimes I have re-beveled the "rest" that is not steep enough and put a rubber button on the back side so the rack rests on the lid.
