Ron,
You would not have experienced the zing (more accurately described as a 
sizzle) with the softer material of the standard bridge pin. After the drill 
rod experience, I too would not use drill rod as a bridge pin, although I 
have used common nails on occasion. They are remarkably suitable as bridge 
pins.

Okay, I've just never experienced it, but then I've always used garden
variety supply house bridge pins, and intend to continue to.
