There are/were many members who gave freely of their time to contribute, and who didn't get any compensation for it. If they had been consultants, few of us would have been able to afford their advice. The listserv format is so simple and basic that no time is wasted dealing with passwords, logins, identities, communities, etc. Even if the time isn't all that much, it represents a roadblock and a mental hurdle to participate. Personally, I agree with Alan. I like being able to sort things on my end, not from and endless list of topic subforums. That one tidbit of information that I glean from an obscure topic can often become a breakthrough moment, something that I can use to save time and effort in my work. The shame is, that if that person decides it's too cumbersome and time-wasting to contribute, I might miss that pearl of wisdom. We're talking about people here, not a machine. People are sensitive and sentient. It's a matter of trust and respect amongst ourselves. More and more we find ourselves talked down to, and not heard.
> As far as the old list goes, the information was archived and searchable for any topic or author. Sometimes it worked better than at other times, but it was there. Now that the barn has been condemned, and many horses have left, I'm not sure they'll be able to round them (us) up again.

I, for one, like receiving all posts and deciding what to read, what to save for a "rainy day," and to delete right away. I want to underscore an important point that someone else made against sub-forums: I peruse pianotech the way I choose which classes to attend at a convention, which is partially by subject, but largely by who is putting forth the information. Yes, there are certain posters whose words I am ALWAYS interested in reading, regardless of the subject matter, and others who are, shall we say, at the other end of the desirability spectrum.
