Having a Google account is one way to use the Google Group, but it is not
required. You can just as easily participate from your own email address
just like on the old pianotech at ptg.org list by sending an email to this
address:

  pianotech+subscribe at googlegroups.com

You will receive a response asking you to confirm, and then you're in.
It'll tell you to send emails to pianotech at googlegroups.com to reach the
group.

I also suggest getting a Google account in any events, because then you can
try out Google+ as well.
