I inherited a baggie of punchings like you are describing.  I keep them at my desk and during extended phone calls I sort a few by color into some twist top containers.  It helps pass the time and eventually I will have them sorted out.

The last time that happened, instead of sorting them back to their respective places or just throwing them out as in other occurrences; I placed them in a plastic bag which is tucked in my tool box for field spot leveling.
