<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I mentioned in an earlier post one =
of the
other reasons that I have not gone to XP...I have certain hardware that =
will
NEVER be compatible with WIN XP or 2K because of the chipset on the =
card
itself. The company that makes the card can't do anything about it as it =
isn't a
software issue. So, for me to go to XP would require me purchasing
new hardware. Add that to the cost of XP itself as well =
as additional
software I use that does not run as well as, if not at all, under =
XP...for me to
upgrade to XP and have the same capabilities as I do now would run me =
well into
the + $1500.00 range...</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Yes, I have heard of many who love =
XP and
that's fine. If XP works well for you that's great! =
I am
just saying that it is not for everyone. I can do everything I need to =
do on my
PC currently with WIN 98 SE and do it very well. But like I said, =
crashes and
weird stuff can happen, with ANY OS and hardware...</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I just don't like where things are =
headed with
this activation/registration stuff and I find it intrusive, as well as
offensive, that if I decided to upgrade ANYTHING on my computer, be it =
hardware
or software, that I should be forced to "re-activate it" =
within 30
days or give Microsoft ANY additional info about it. In =
my eyes
they have no right to get ANY additional info from me other than =
the fact
that I am a legit user of the software itself. So, the definition of =
"Spyware",
in my mind, includes Microsoft XP. </FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT><FONT face=Arial =
size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>FWIW, I also can leave my PC on =
for weeks at a
time also under WIN 98 SE without any lockups and problems. When =
these
things happen it is most likely because of a particular application =
causing a
memory leak or something, or configuration issues. I know many =
people who
have switched to XP and have switched back to 98 SE or 2K because
they had major problems because of hardware/driver issues, =
software
incompatibility, etc...</FONT><FONT face=Arial =

<DIV><BR></DIV><FONT size=3>Well, I have to disagree.<BR><BR>I have =
been using
XP since last November here at home. I have since installed it on 3 =
other
computers (my work computer and 2 others at the office), and can say =
without
any hesitation that this is the best Microsoft OS ever made. =
<BR><BR>I
have never had any settings changed after an update.<BR><BR>The fears =
about
changing hardware are unfounded - you have to change much more than =
one
hardware item for it to notice. It in no way "locks" you =
hardware.
I have changed sound cards, network cards, and display cards without =
it saying
anything. If you changed all three at once, or bought a new =
motherboard
and processor, Windows would ask you to re-activate it, and will give =
you 30
days to do so. If the on-line activation doesn't work, they have =
a
special toll free number to call for activation.<BR><BR>I am not at =
all fond
of the whole activation concept, but it has not proven to be intrusive =
at
all.<BR><BR>"Spyware" is software that comes from web sites or from =
other
applications you install. These programs gather information =
about your
computer and how you browse the web and such. There are free =
utilities
you can download which scan your system for Spyware and clean it out, =
such as
"AdAware" from <A href="http://www.lavasoftusa.com/"
eudora="autourl">www.lavasoftUSA.com</A> This one is highly =
recommended,
and they distribute a free version<BR><BR>Windows XP is by far the =
most stable
operating system I have ever used, and that includes Mac OS 8 and =
9. No
computer is crash proof, but XP is as close as I have ever used. =
At the
office I normally run 6 or 7 large programs at the same time, some of =
which
are not known to be very stable (Lotus Approach, and Word Perfect 10, =
for
instance). I very rarely have to reboot that machine. I =
leave it
running for weeks at a time sometimes, only rebooting if I have done =
an update
or something. I used to have to reboot Windows 98 SE at least =
twice a
day! If I didn't, it would get locked up and force the
reboot.<BR><BR>Don Mannino<BR><BR></BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></BODY></HTML>
