That must've been a long time back, because German Roslau Piano wire
currently sold in the US is NOT Metric, and is "marked" In
American Standard gauge. It's been that way for a while
now.

Sorry, my post might have added to the confusion a a little. I
shouldn't have said the "metric" gage marked on the
wrapper.

It was just a couple of years ago. I measured the wire with a
metric micrometer, and it measured exactly the correct dimension for
metric-drawn wire, but not of the size marked on the label, if you
expected the label to be the metric size. It was marked on the
label with the US wire size closest to the measurement. So what you
are saying is the same thing I wrote - the wire is being sold in US wire
sizes. If you measure the wire carefully, though, it doesn't quite
measure 'right on' the normal US wire gauge dimensions - it will match
the metric wire dimensions in the spreadsheet I sent.

Now, I know that Mapes draws both metric dimensions and US dimensions, so
it is possible that Roslau also has started to draw US dimensions - but
not on the wire I bought a few years back.
