concert work,
particularly that all-important tuning & touch-up just before the
performance, you had better know how to splice a string. Tuning =
stability
and evenness of tone are very important, at least for the duration of =
the
performance. Yes, strings have broken within the last 10 minutes =
before
the curtain rises, and the last thing you would want to do then is =
try to
stabilize a new string and voice the note to match the
others. Besides, in the case of wound strings, a replacement =
would
have to be ordered in from somewhere unless you have with you a set =
of
wound strings for that particular model of piano. (Universal bass =
strings
and concert pianos don't mix tonally.) Splicing the string will at =
least
get the piano through the performance. Afterwards, you can worry =
about
putting in the new string.</FONT></DIV>
