I would replace the original c/b execution with a half round or half oval metal. String rendering will be greatly improved as the broad expanse of felt causes drag/friction. I did it on a Baldwin R a few years ago with favorable results.  S$S has the same iteration. Last year on an M, I made a mahogany half round to fit the curvature and covered it with bushing cloth.
