<DIV>Looking in 2 catalogs I see at least 7 different kinds of mutes which are mainly designed to deal with problems in the vertical treble. Also, don't leave out a thin strip mute, which can work very well if you are careful to lift the damper heads out of the way.</DIV>
<DIV>And, various ways of tying ribbons, strange bends of the wire handles and extra long handles on very small rubber mutes are all part of the tool kit. </DIV>
<DIV>Remember that some mutes are designed to work under the hammers with the handle sticking out over the rest rail.</DIV>
<DIV>I've never found the one-style-fits-all vertical mute. But mutes are cheap and light, so I suggest buying all of them, learning how to use them and having them in your tuning kit. Then you can get inventive, start modifying them, and post your discoveries to this list.</DIV>

<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I have had problems with rubber wedge mutes falling down into an upright piano. In some places it is difficult to find the best position to place the mutes, especially in the higher treble because the strings are so short and there is so little room. When the mute falls down it sometimes dislodges the hammer butt springs and I have to re-position them on the hammer butts with a damper regulating tool. What would you recommend I do to stop this happening? Thank you very much. </FONT></DIV>
