Well, my mother used to make the best, so I said I'd email the recipie, which

<DIV>Ruth Barnard's Thin Oatmeal Cookies</DIV>

<DIV>1. Cream together 1 c. shortening, 1 1/4 c. brown sugar, and 1 tsp
vanilla</DIV>
<DIV>2. Combine 2 c. flour, 1 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp baking soda. Add to
creamed mixture along with 1/4 c. boiling water. Add 2 c. of oats.</DIV>
<DIV>3. Drop onto baking sheet and press thin with a fork that has been
dipped in water and shaken. Cookies should be about 3 to 3 1/2 inches in
diameter.</DIV>
<DIV>4. Bake at 375 degrees until lightly browned.</DIV>
