I've found that the glue dries very quickly - in fact you might have
less time than you think to reposition things, so I do my alignment
without glue and use a pencil mark to index the parts. Add glue, align
to the marks, then wedge under the tray and spring clamp the trap
lever.

My biggest problem seems to be getting the new pitman the correct
length on the first try! I remember somebody saying to carry several
lengths along to the job, so I guess I'm not alone!

Dale & others - what are you using in lieu of a block of hammer
felt to limit the travel of the trap lever? I've been wanting to try a
glide bolt for this, mounted in the lever with the business end facing
the keybed. I've recently noticed that this is exactly how the new
Masons are done - very nice.

Seems like a good idea. When I drill the tray and lever I
usually drill into the old leather using the impressions as my
target. I'm trying to figure out if there is any reason why drilling
into the wood would be better? The old leather is usually tacked
in...advantage to going to the wood is no waiting for glue to
dry...your approach does give you the opportunity to align it...

I'm retro-fitting a pitman tomorrow and I might just do
that...shoe leather.
