Most of my major rebuilds come from an inheritance. You have just inherited Grammy's piano along with her million dollar house. I live in California and that is not an exaggeration. Exactly what are you going to do with her Worthlesszer that is rusty, ruined and in need of everything? It's landfill. If I were the client, I would talk a competent rebuilder into taking on the project and would not worry about spending 5 figures to have Grammy's piano beautiful and playable again, but that's just me. I'd do the same thing if it were a 62 Rambler, it's a way of turning a little what she has left you into the restoration of something she had. I need to have respect for that. The only reason I wouldn't take the job is it would distract me from doing other pianos I'm more interested in, but I tell people all the time there are only 2 choices, fix it or throw it away. In about two minutes you can have nothing but a backframe, pinblock, soundboard, plate and keybed. I just love the looks of that piano and remember how I liked the other one I've seen, after I quit cursing it's ancestry for the hard time I had getting into it, as I remember it really was in terrible shape.
