<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Dear Mr Sprague</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Thank you for yours of the 11th. If you
were tuning a Bluthner 6' 3" fitted with Aliquot stringing, it would be known
in the UK as a Style VIII.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I regret I do not know of a company in the USA
who would be able to help with the broken strings but there is an excellent
company in the UK making very high quality strings who have the scaling of all
Bluthner grands. All you would need to do is to advise them of the size,
model, i.e., Style VIII, and perhaps the serial number and request the
individual strings that you require as they have all scalings.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>The company is EKA, Heyford Galleries, High
Street, Upper Heyford, Bicester, Oxon OX25 5LE, telephone (+44)
01869 232 282, fax (+44) 01869 233 190. I don't believe they have an
email address as I understand in the background there is some religious reason
for not wanting such electronic devices. However, we would recommend
them and suggest you contact them direct with your requirements.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Regarding the replacement stings on the Aliquot
section, the scalings relate to the level at which they are tuned.
Therefore, if you are tuning in the alto section and the Aliquot is tuned an
octave higher, then the string gauge of the note an octave higher is the
string gauge wanted. When tuning the notes in unison, it is the same
string. So, as an example, if the Aliquot string related to C52 needs
replacing, it will be the gauge the same as the trichord on note C64.
Whereas, if the Aliquot on C76 is broken, it will be the same gauge as the
trichord on C76.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I hope this all helps and with all best
wishes</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>

<BLOCKQUOTE>What I'm wondering is what gauge the 4th strings in the treble
sections should be - are they the same gauge as the unisons they
accompany? (Since the lower section is, as I understand, half as long and
tuned an octave higher but the top section is tuned at unison?).<BR><BR>If
someone can steer us in the right direction it would be most
