<DIV>Hello to All</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> When anything is built it has to be called something.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> When the small pianos were built if it was lower than </DIV>
<DIV>40 in. they named them Spinet. </DIV>
<DIV>If they were 40 in. to 43 in. they were named Consoles. </DIV>
<DIV>If they were 44 in. to 47 in. they were named Studios. </DIV>
<DIV>If they were 48 in. to 50 in. they were named
Three/quarter. </DIV>
<DIV>If they were 51 in. or more they were call
Uprights</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>It is the size <STRONG>not</STRONG> the type of
action that determines the name.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> In order to use a full size action in Consoles it
had to be </DIV>
<DIV>"dropped". They are several types of connecters from the </DIV>
<DIV>keys to the action that have been used. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> The Weaver bi-level was mentioned. Even
though these </DIV>
<DIV> were convenient to remove from the piano they had a major</DIV>
<DIV>design flaw</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> The benefit of a full size action the 2 1/2 in. jack and
the</DIV>
<DIV>4 in. hammer shank and longer keys is stability, </DIV>
<DIV>performance and durability. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> "Baldwin" to their credit was the last to use a
full size action</DIV>
<DIV>in Consoles. A three note action model that demonstrates
this</DIV>
<DIV>is in the PTG Museum at the Home Office.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> This was stopped because of two reasons. The major one
</DIV>
<DIV>was cost, It was much<STRONG> cheaper</STRONG> to built
a " compressed " </DIV>
<DIV>action than a " direct- blow " action the
second was the </DIV>
<DIV>whining of us technicians. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> Facts are often dull. " All knowledge comes
from the past"</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
