Hi John and Barb,
Shrinking the felt is OK to a point. Upside, a little more
stability for the jack position. Downside, an increase in jack
noise so be careful. I suggest you experiment before you do all
88. Usually there is some room to reposition the jack
so take a careful look at this option.

Even after compressing, I don't think it will stay, unless you possibly
dampen them, or something.

I'm replacing the jacks in some Thayer
wippens. The replacements have really big, fluffy jack button
punchings--which put the jack position too far forward and if I bend the
spoon backward to get the jack back far enough, there isn't enough
tension on the spring that's held by the loop on the jack. (Follow
me?). Instead of trying to compress the questionable
punchings on the jacks, I think it's easier to compress a set of
replacement punchings that I have which look less wild than those on the
replacement jacks, but still need compressing. Then I'll simply
replace the original poofy ones. The punchings are on my bench,
under a cutting board that is weighted down.
