The longer days phenomenon occurs in both hemispheres. Here in Hawaii, in the winter it gets dark around 6. In the summer around 7:30.

Here is a funny regarding longer days. When I was in Viet Nam, it would get dark right about 7 PM in the summer. When I got home in June, my mom told me she had a party planned for me, starting at 7 PM. I went out and visited with my friends, thinking to myself, "when it gets dark, I'll go home". Well, it being in Northern Illinois, it didn't get dark until around 9 PM. Most of my family and friends had left by the time I got home. You can imagine my mother's reaction.

I guess that the latitude determines when the sun decides to hide. In Winnipeg, the shortest day also is Dec.21, or there abouts.

It can be fairly dark around 4, 4:30 , when it's overcast, but June 21, the longest day, we've played golf at 10:00, 10:30. Not great light

at that time, but playable, if you're not too bright. Spoke to a fellow last week who worked up north of here about 900 miles, and he

said that the sun could shine at midnight, and it never seemed dark as we know it.( June ), but be dark most all day in Dec. Seems

that the further you go, the more extreme it gets. I wonder what the conditions are south of the equator, such as Brazil, or Australia.

Yes, as we are well north of the equator, the day do indeed get shorter in the winter. However, not to the degree you folks up north experience. Today (or about) is the winter solstice - the shortest day of the year - sunrise is at 7:16 AM and sunset is at 5:38 PM. I have been walking my dogs in the evening lately and usually leave at 5:15 and walk 45 minutes - it's definitely getting dark, but there is still some light when I get home about 6:00 PM.

Near Tampa, I am at 27.9 degrees north latitude. Seattle, which is central N-S in Washington is at 47.6 degrees north latitude. So you folks get about twice the summer/winter extremes (sunset/sunrise) that we experience down here in Florida.

So yes, we get the same effect, just not as severe (including temperature!).

Hi Terry,
I bet it's great being down in Florida this time of year with the warm weather, but I'm curious. Here in Washington state and back East where I'm from originally, it starts getting dark around 5ish in the winter before today when our day light starts returning. do you guys in Florida experience the same scenario with the days growing shorter than longer? Are you far enough south where this doesn't occur, or does it get dark early in Florida as well?
