hinge screws aren't meant to hold all that weight and they will pull loose if
this practice is continued long term. The only people I've seen do this
are just plain ignorant. Maybe the front lid reflects more of the sound to
him, and he uses it as sort of a "monitor speaker," but it's not the best
idea. Besides, it's too easy to bang your head on the edge of the
lid. And it looks stupid. </FONT></DIV>

visiting well-known pianist. He insisted that when the grand lid is
opened and resting on the long stick, that the -front- lid be closed.
That is, the front lid was extended toward the player
with its bass edge resting on the bass end of the piano
case. The rest of the front lid was supported only by its
hinges.</FONT></DIV>
