AB Chase that I did some restoration on. I think it was a compensator for
lost motion when the pedal that raises the rest rail is engaged. I didn't
experiment with it enough to be sure, though.</FONT></DIV>

is a picture of a whippen from a Chickering Bros (ugh) grand. It's the kind
with a soft pedal mechanism that raises the hammer rest rail closer to the
