It's a lost motion compensator for when the hammer rest rail lifts the shanks. <br>
Attached is a photo of one. Notice the linkage between the pivot arm of the <br>
rest rail and the rod that engages the LM compensator. <br>
<br>
It allows the weight of the hammer and wippen to keep the rear of the key down. <br>
Without it, the front of the key goes down to the degree that the hammer rail <br>
is raised thus sacrificing dip. <br>
