would have to be closed, not half open. And admittedly, even a closed lid leaves
that 1/4-inch or so gap all the way around the rim. I would imagine that a
string cover with closed lid would work well. Just because many folks would
leave the lid half open doesn't mean a closed lid with string cover wouldn't
work quite well. I keep my lid closed most of the time.</FONT></DIV>

That all sounds good and all but it doesn’t hold up with what I see in the
field. I completely agree that it will have a positive effect with a string
cover or blanket but I have not seen it deter rust or oxidation with only the
lid as the insulator. I’m not saying it wouldn’t in a situation where the
entire lid was in use but we all know that the vast majority of the time the
half lid is left open.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

heat the air beneath the soundboard. The warm air under the soundboard will
tend to stay there if undisturbed because warm air rises (it's less dense).
That warm air will in turn warm the soundboard. The soundboard will warm the
air above it (like where the strings are). If there is some type of air
movement restriction in close proximity to and above the strings (like a lid),
or some type of insulation (like a string cover or a blanket over the entire
piano), then some of that heated air will remain in the string environment.
The warmed air will have a lower relative humidity level than the rest of the
room, thus helping to reduce string corrosion.</SPAN><o:p></o:p></P></DIV>

I also agree with you! This does, however, morph from the original point of
what the DC unit does or does not do. I agree that a string cover will help
with the rusty strings issue. I don’t believe that the DC unit will help
